LIGHTS OUT

The entirely true story of the worst night shift in history.

01

An ordinary night shift

Sector 15. The Sovereign Core. 3:47 AM. Deep beneath the city, technician third-class VESPER is on cycle four of a strictly one-cycle coffee, babysitting the reactor that keeps all fifteen sectors glowing.

Steady hum. Green lights. Best shift in the grid.

Art direction — Wide establishing shot: a cathedral-scale reactor hall lit teal-and-shadow, a glowing ring core humming dead center, coolant towers blinking. Tiny at the catwalk rail: Vesper, hood down, cradling a battered coffee cup. Two maintenance drones drift past with friendly green status lights.

02

The side project

DAYS WITHOUT AREACTOR INCIDENT:999ATTEMPTS 1–999

For 999 shifts, Vesper has chased an impossible side project: the VOID-TAP — clean, infinite power drawn from the dark between the stars. Attempt #1,000 sits on the bench… one crystal away from history.

One more regulator crystal, and this city's lights never flicker again.

Narrator: the lights were about to do considerably worse than flicker.

Art direction — Cluttered workbench close-up. A fist-sized violet crystal on a test rig, humming with barely-contained wrongness. Behind it, a whiteboard: 'DAYS WITHOUT A REACTOR INCIDENT: 999'. A bin overflowing with 999 dead gray crystals, labeled ATTEMPTS 1–999.

03

The last ingredient

The crystal slides in. For one perfect heartbeat, everything works exactly as calculated.

Vesper has just enough time to smile.

Art direction — Full-bleed white-out panel. A blinding core of light dead center with cyan and violet shock-rays slicing to every corner. Vesper's silhouette pinwheels through the air, coffee cup and clipboard flying separately. The panel borders themselves should look scorched.

04

The breach

NEONDUNESDATAREEFSOVEREIGNCORE

Vesper is out cold before the alarms finish inhaling. Something pours out of the tap — not light. Its opposite. Violet un-light slithers into the vents, rides the power lines, and drinks its way through all fifteen sectors.

The city evacuates in eleven minutes. Vesper — unconscious under a desk — does not.

Art direction — Overhead map view: the city as a 5×3 grid of fifteen glowing sector tiles. From the Sovereign Core tile, a jagged violet crack splits the map, dripping tendrils of un-light that crawl along power lines and stain tile after tile violet. Labels on the nearest tiles: NEON DUNES, DATA REEF.

05

The city turns

By dawn, there is no dawn. In the Neon Dunes, the sand crackles with static. In the Data Reef, the billboards scream in a language with no vowels.

Friendly drones twist into Sting Drones. Cargo hounds become Lance Hounds. Vending machines become Volatile Husks — they still take exact change. Then they explode.

The swarm also brought Menders. Field medics. For the monsters. Nobody said the void plays fair.

Art direction — Corrupted skyline at false dawn: black towers against a bruised violet sky, a dead void-orb where the sun should be. Windows glow the wrong color. Maintenance drones hang twisted in the air, single violet eyes burning. One skyscraper leans like something enormous shouldered past it.

06

The transformation

Vesper wakes up… different. The blast fused runner and reactor: veins traced in neon, boots that no longer bother with the floor, and a visor glow you could read by.

Okay. New rule. No more overtime.

Art direction — Hero reveal: Vesper wakes hovering a lazy half-inch off the floor, visor burning cyan, hood trimmed in living neon, concentric light-rings pulsing outward. The spilled coffee hangs beside them, every droplet frozen mid-air in void-stasis. Debris floats. Gravity is now a suggestion.

07

The powers

LEVEL UP! PICK 1 OF 3+DMG+SPD+HP!?

Vesper picks up a wrench. The wrench — charged with void-light — aims itself and vaporizes a corrupted drone across the room. Anything Vesper holds is a weapon now. And it never misses on purpose.

…Did my WRENCH just no-scope that thing?

The drone bursts into glowing shards — stolen city light — and a clatter of scrap. The shards fly straight into Vesper's chest, and the visor pings, cheerfully: LEVEL UP. PICK 1 OF 3.

Why is my concussion gamified?

Art direction — Action beat, low angle: Vesper mid-flinch, holding an ordinary wrench that is emitting an extremely un-ordinary neon beam. Across the room a corrupted drone detonates in a gold starburst and bursts into cyan XP shards that arc back into Vesper's chest, plus tumbling scrap cubes. In the corner of Vesper's vision, a glowing HUD card: 'LEVEL UP! PICK 1 OF 3'.

08

The fine print

Then the fine print: the corrupted don't eat metal. They don't eat flesh. They crave LIGHT — and they hunt the brightest glow in the grid.

And every shard Vesper absorbs makes them stronger… and brighter. Surviving makes you more delicious.

…Oh no. I'm the snack. I'm a snack that keeps seasoning itself.

Scientists would call it a vicious cycle. Vesper calls it the loop. You'll call it "okay, ONE more run."

Art direction — Dread close-up: Vesper alone in a sea of black, lit only by their own body — the single brightest object left in the city. From every corner, violet wisps curl inward like the whole dark is sniffing. Eye-pairs blink open at the panel edges.

09

The realization

Beyond the shattered reactor doors: ten thousand violet eyes, all turning at once — a city-sized swarm noticing the last light left on.

Right. Big picture: I've made a huge glow-stake.

Art direction — The scariest panel in the issue: pure darkness filled with dozens — implied thousands — of paired violet eyes at every depth, all rotating toward the lower corner, where one small figure glows defiantly, casting a thin cone of light. Scale should feel city-sized.

10

The armory

SUPPLY CACHE“FOR EMERGENCIES”

But here's the thing about Vesper: 999 shifts of "borrowed" scrap have to go somewhere. Behind a fake wall in maintenance bay 7: Pulse Pistols. Photon Lances. Arc Coils. A Havoc Launcher labeled for emergencies.

Everyone called it hoarding. Vesper called it Tuesday. And the restock plan writes itself: the swarm drops scrap. The void is generously funding its own extermination, one wave at a time.

Told the review board this would pay off.

Art direction — Triumphant reveal: a fake maintenance wall slid aside, gold sign reading SUPPLY CACHE. Racks of neon-outlined weapons floor to ceiling — pistols, rifles, coils — and one oversized launcher on the bottom shelf tagged 'FOR EMERGENCIES'. Crates stamped with scrap diamonds. Vesper silhouetted in the doorway, glowing.

11

Suit up

RAZORBULWARKVEXKIRACOIL

Aegis Blades spin to orbit. The Seeker Swarm wakes up humming. Out in the ruins, nine sector-sovereigns — basilisk, brood-queen, titan — crown themselves rulers of Vesper's city.

And the rescue ping Vesper fired off? Five answers. Razor (four guns, zero armor). Bulwark (functionally a door). Vex (already built a turret out of a vending machine). Kira (did knife tricks before the apocalypse). Coil (somehow already looted the cache. How.)

Fifteen sectors. Nine crowns. Six runners made of light.

…They should run.

Art direction — Gear-up montage: Vesper center-frame as Aegis Blades snap into orbit around them, a Sentry Drone boots up with a gold eye, and a Seeker Swarm forms a V overhead. Along the top edge, nine crowned monster silhouettes loom like a wanted poster. At the panel's edges, five smaller hooded runners arrive, each rim-lit a different color, names floating beside them.

12

The run begins

The vault door blows open. The swarm floods in. And Vesper — the brightest thing left in the world — walks into it.

One more thing the blast broke: death. When a runner falls, their light just re-forms back at the Core — a little wiser, a little angrier, and free to pick an even meaner danger tier out of spite.

The void has genuinely no idea what it started.

They crave the light? Come and get it.

Art direction — Full-page splash: vault door blown open, the swarm flooding in from both edges — and Vesper sprinting INTO it across a neon perspective grid, leaning forward, trailing motion lines, glowing like a dare. This is the poster shot.
